About
An impeccably maintained course with some great views and premium facilities
Opened in 2021, Aquella Golf Resort & Country Club is a championship-standard layout from Pacific Golf Coast Design that meanders through gently rolling terrain dotted with tidal waterways and lakes as well as endless bunkers, whose faces are attractively made up of vintage railway sleepers. While it’s over 7,000 yards from the black tees, the course has been designed as a resort course so it’s playable for golfers of all standards.
The round starts with a long but straightforward par-5. Despite the generous fairway, water on both sides lurks to claim the most wayward of drives, but if you can keep your ball dry and avoid the bunkers either side of the green you should have a chance at starting with a good score.
After the 2nd, a short par-3 with a large bunker short and right of the green, there’s another par-5 where you must avoid fairway bunkers off the tee and take on a risky carry over the waterway that cuts in front of and around the green. The long par-4 4th features another generous fairway, but the undulating green protected by two substantial bunkers provides a proper challenge.
Both the 5th and the 6th are par 4s featuring waterways cutting across the fairway, and while the 7th features water down the left and bunkers either side of the green, hitting straight should offer up a birdie opportunity. T
The 8th is a picturesque par-3 where your tee shot must carry over both a lake and a large bunker protecting the front of the sloping green, while scoring well on the last hole of the front nine requires threading your drive between the twin fairway bunkers, then carrying another waterway and avoiding the four bunkers guarding the green.
The back nine at Aquella Golf Resort & Country Club start with a short par-4 that’s likely driveable by the pros. The rest of us will have to contend with a tree in the middle of the fairway that will punish any drives that go too far right. The signature hole is the 11th, a gorgeous par-3 that plays towards the ocean (and often into the wind) and features four bunkers guarding a generous green with a steep run-off to the back. Club selection is at a premium here.
The 12th, the hardest hole on the course, is a long par four with water all the way up the right hand side. Without a good drive, reaching the green in two is tough, and bunkers to the right punish those trying too hard to avoid the water to the right.
After the 13th, a short par-3 that also has sand left and water to the right of the green, comes a par-5 that doglegs to the right and then back to the left. Finding the generous fairway shouldn’t be a problem, but threading your second through the narrow gap on the trees can cause problems.
Following a pair of par 4s, the long par-5 17th is all about staying out of the bunkers that lie in the landing zone for your second shot. The kidney-shaped green itself is protected by three more sand traps, so you’ll do well to get through the hole without reaching for your sand wedge.
The last is a 443-yard dogleg par-4, where sand is once again a threat, with four bunkers clustered in the landing zone. The perfect final approach has no room for error, with bunkers left and right and a steep runoff to water behind. A fitting finale to an enjoyable challenge on an impeccably maintained course.
The facilities are first class, with an excellent restaurant overlooking the Andaman sea, well-stocked pro shop and elegant locker rooms. There’s even a 20-bay driving range with the latest in automatic ball dispensers if you need to loosen up before your round.
Overall, a round at Aquella Golf Resort and Country Club has much to recommend it, and is certainly worth the short drive from Phuket.
