About

A scenic setting and some particularly memorable holes make for an enjoyable challenge

Located around an hour north of Phuket, Katathong Golf Resort & Spa is a championship-standard course set in a beautiful jungle-clad valley that was once the site of a tin mine. There are plenty of water hazards to contend with, not least the beautiful natural stream which cascades down the waterfall in front of the clubhouse and meanders its way through the back nine, and a fair few elevation changes, with the Zoysia fairways following the natural contours of the land as they weave between mature trees to lightning fast greens.

There are some memorable holes at Katathong Golf Resort & Spa. The first features a 90 degree dogleg right that requires an accurate drive to be in good position for an approach to the elevated green. The second is more straightforward, a long par 5 with a narrow landing area with OB encroaching on the left. Your second needs to avoid the water along the right, then you have a tricky approach as a ditch runs across in front of the green and it’s not easily visible from the fairway.

After a medium-length par-3 and a long, straight par-5 with water all the way down the left side, there’s more water in play in the form of a stream that runs across the 5th fairway, making for a nervy approach to a green that’s well protected by bunkers left and right.

The rest of the front nine offers some good opportunities for scoring: the 6th and 7th are both par-4 doglegs that reward accuracy off the tee, the 8th is a shortish par-3 over water to a flat, generous green, and the 9th an easy par-4 that plays towards the clubhouse.

The back nine at Katathong Golf Resort & Spa starts with the signature hole, a memorable par 3 that plays from elevated tee boxes to a small island green below. A tough ask for high handicappers, and at over 200 yards from the back tees, a potential card-wrecker for anyone.

There’s more water to negotiate off the 11th tee, a tough par-5 that requires another water carry on approach to a green that’s hidden behind a cluster of trees, and the stream that crosses the 12th fairway is a risky carry if you take it on. The same stream cuts through both the par-5 13th and the dead straight par-4 14th, but shouldn’t present too many problems unless you hit very long off the tees.

Your drive on the 15th must thread the needle through a narrow gap in the trees to a fairway that opens up, while your approach must similarly avoid bunkers either side of the raised green. The 16th, a spectacular par-4 that offers a wonderful view over the course from the elevated tee-box, features a nervy drive over a deep ravine and a difficult approach to table-top green surrounded by a two-metre high bank.

The last two holes will be talked about long after you have finished your round, especially the unusual 17th, a medium-length par-3 that plays over a deep gorge to a green that’s so massively elevated that the top of the flag is the only thing visible from the tee box. It’s safe to say that the drop zone is well used!

The finishing hole demands a drive over a lake to a narrow fairway with water all along the left. Rated as the toughest hole on the course, it’s hard not to end your round with a blemish on your scorecard.

The large clubhouse is decorated with mining memorabilia and features elegant locker rooms, well-stocked pro shop and a decent restaurant that’s realistically your only option for a post round meal. There’s an attached hotel with spa for those looking to stay overnight, but overall it’s the golf course at Katathong Golf Resort & Spa that has the most to recommend it.

It is a challenging course with tight fairways, water hazards and tough par 3s..

The front nine was pleasant and good warmup for the second nine which was tough with tight fairways, water hazards and two tough par 3s. Overall, we enjoyed playing at this course.

Very nice course, and far enough away from Phuket to not be crowded. Will play next time i am there.

Great course, If you get the chance. The staff and caddies are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Very wet when I played, but the course held up well. I will definitely play again.

Course in reasonable condition but greens very slow

Course was almost completely empty, so it was like playing a private golf course.. Some of the fairways were a bit bare and the greens were incredibly slow.
